EXCLUSIVE.

This design is inspired by the embroidered “Owl and Pigeon” wall hanging,1895.  The original was worked in silks on a background of green woven silk damask, designed by John Henry Dearle for William Morris and Morris & Co. and embroidered by Mrs. Frances Battye, 1898-1900.

Originally designed as a portiere, a decorative cover to a door or doorway, the design features an intricate display of Morris’ beloved floral and animal motifs, which breathe life and movement into this wonderous design. Morris’ best inspiration came from his garden where he cared for native plants and developed his deep appreciation of nature.  Morris wanted to use his artistic designs to capture the essence of nature for the home.  He believed it was not possible to create exact imitations of nature, rather he created stylized depictions of plants and animals for his designs.

Dearle was a talented textile and stained-glass designer and apprentice of William Morris. After the death of Morris (1896) Dearle took over the management of Morris & Co.

In RENNIE & ROSE tradition, we have adapted this quintessentially Morris design for our woven home décor products, and with Morris’ spirit in mind, for today’s homes.  The quality and level of fine detail in this weaving are exceptional.  Every time you look, you will see a detail you had not noticed before.
